Ornithology Division

The Ornithology Division of the TCWC contains over 14,100 specimens from 49 countries, primarily Texas (66%) and Mexico (24%). Holdings include representatives of 1025 Species, 620 Genera and 124 Families. Only two of the rarer Orders of birds are not represented in this collection. The majority of these materials are prepared as skins and skulls; however, the collections include nearly 900 specimens as skeletons and 273 animals preserved in alcohol. In addition, the collection contains over 800 egg sets and nests, representing nearly 300 species of birds.

The Texas Photo Record Files, housed in the TCWC, contain an estimated 6000 photographs, slides, CDs, and video tapes that document occurrences of birds in Texas.  This division also houses the Texas Ornithological Archives which contains all records of the Texas Ornithological Society, as well as the private records, correspondence and similar material from individuals formerly active in Texas ornithology.  Research projects by Dr. W. B. Davis, Dr. K. L. Dixon, and Dr. K. A. Arnold have provided most of the material in this collection; however, in recent years the TCWC has also grown through acquisition of the ornithology collections of Austin College, Southern Methodist University, Midwestern University and the University of North Texas.
